Awareness

Rhetorical situation:

With all the chaos happening globally, we have blurred the issue of rape. It is an issue that is going on for decades. Even though our generation is changing for good, there is still a lack of understanding about sexual abuse and rape. Although our generation is learning and growing, we have found a way to deliver these sexual comments in a joking manner. I wanted to compile different videos into one to send the message across about how dangerous our mentality can be. Our perspective on a person’s life can be much more harmful than we intend it to be. As we can see in the video, young guys are talking about how girls should be home at a certain time and also that there is a 100% chance of everything being the girl’s fault. Which leads rape victims to major depression.

Genre:

I used a video as my genre to show different aspects of rape. Social media is the quickest way to send a message across the world. It can be accessed through any device which is a lot more convenient. The video is a great way of spreading the news because many people are visual learners. I believe the visual of the guys stating their opinion about a girl’s curfew, and the victim-blaming will wake people up. They will be able to share the video with their family and friends and also start a movement that will be a push toward the ignorant people in our society to come out of the rape culture they grew up in.

Audience:

This video is for young adults and parents because young people need to be aware of such issues as this, so they can take action and change their surroundings because the majority of the time young girls are the victims of these incidents. Also, it is important to know that not everyone in our generation is changing their perspective. The culture they grow up in will always have an effect on their mentality. This video is also directed toward parents because I want them to see the situation other parents are in. They should also recognize that no matter how strict they are toward their daughter, girls will always be blamed for the actions taken by the sexist group of people of the community. I want them to build their daughter’s confidence and also reach their son’s boundaries at a young age.

Purpose:

The purpose of using this video to show people the struggle of a family, community, and country. I want people to understand that making comments on a person’s appearance and their family values can be harmful. A girl should not have to be protected every step of their life. It should be their choice to decide how long they can stay outside. We should be careful of the words we use towards girls even when it’s a joke because many people do neglect women’s rights. If someone uses words to sexually insult a person, we need to go against it even when it’s a friend. If we let our close people get away with insulting a girl, no one can guarantee that a stranger will not do the same. Small talks like these cause rape and we need to do the most to stop it from increasing.

Rhetorical situation

Ending rape requires action that needs to be taken by parents, elders and our community as well as everyone else. The culture of our south-Asia is to not let our kids learn about sex, which than becomes the result of massive amount of sexual harassment, rape, gender equality later on. Setting a boundary and respect between siblings is the first step toward their understanding of what they may face later on in life. Majority of the time victims fall apart because of what they were taught by parents and society. Teaching them to be confident, self-defense and believing them can bring them out of major mental state. The poster mentions few different issues and how we can stop it from happening. We all need to take action from our end, for all of us to end it together.

Genre:

I used a poster to further explain and spread awareness. Posters are one of the easiest ways to spread a message using small but powerful words. I want people to recognize the pressure that is put on a girl from all around. The pressure, insult, lack of understanding has pushed a massive number of girls to the path of suicide or depression. This is a poster that can be spread to all communities. The boldness of the poster will open many people’s eyes. It uses a little amount of words to reveal the pain underneath.

Audience:

The intended audience for this poster is parents. We youngers can make so little change if it does not start from the beginning. Parents in south-Asian countries should not keep sex education so mysterious to their kids because that will make kids more curious. Being part of two different cultures and communities, I have learned the massive difference it makes. Parents need to be educated about all the different problems their daughter goes through. They are expected to be the ones to be educated and to educate both their sons and daughters because they play a major role in the lives of their children. Parents are responsible for their children’s knowledge on different issues, they should take the responsibility to teach them.

Purpose:The purpose of using this poster is to send awareness to our community about all the hardships girls have to go through regarding the rape issue. It is for parents to realize that their daughters need more than protection. Protecting her all her life is not an ultimate solution but a temporary one.  Supporting and believing the victim is a parent’s responsibility. They should give more attention to what they may be going through and do the most they can. Parents are a big factor in this issue, and they have a great impact on the victims and the rapists. What they say or do can affect the victim more than intended, so they should learn how to support them. Parents need to speak up against the negativity that comes toward their daughter because the shame will cause more damage than rape has already done. All in all, the many things people say can mean more than what they really mean, and they should be aware of what they say. Parents should both teach and support their sons and daughters, and whatever they choose to say or do will impact them. People should consider the victim’s condition and try putting themselves in their shoes before going and criticizing them. So, everyone has a part, everyone has a role
